YOUNG ARTISTS 3RD PRIZE: WINDOW INTO A RED PANDA'S SOUL BY ASPEN SMITH

I wanted to bring to light the recent mass death of bees.
YOUNG ARTISTS 1ST PRIZE: Protect Me For Tomorrow by Alison Irving
Chimpanzee sitting in a tree. Chimpanzees have disappeared from four African countries, and are nearing extinction in many others.
Commercial hunting for bushmeat and deforestation are taking a huge toll on their populations.
This painting is meant to represent the colorful beauty of the near endangered species, the chimpanzee, and what our negligent actions are causing us to lose.
How terrible would it be to never see this face again, this face that resembles our own, this face with such soulful eyes? I hope to evoke a feeling of sympathy and remorse from those observing this piece.
We cannot sit back and watch this species dwindle or even worse, disappear. We must take action in any way possible. We must save the chimpanzees.
SUBMISSION: Minkie by Markus Orman
I drew this because I am aware that the habitat for primates is diminishing, so I used this cute monkey to demonstrate the beauty that is getting destroyed and the importance of preserving it.

Mommy and Baby Giraffe in the bush of Kapama National Reserve South Africa. Photograph taken with iPhone 5C. My name is Annie Veasey and I am eleven years old. I went to South Africa this summer on a safari and learned so much about endangered species. Since my time on safari I have decided that when I grow up I want to become a vet and help all different kinds of animals stay well. My portfolio includes pictures that I took on my trip. I saw many beautiful animals in their natural habitats.
SUBMISSION: Spoonbill Reflections by Aliya Zarrouk
Endangered Spoonbill in the Florida Everglades. My name is Aliya Zarrouk and I am 11 years old. This was my first watercolor painting that I did at my art camp/school. I tried to based this off of the real picture that my instructor showed me. I never really listened to my instructor showing the rest of the class what to do, instead I copied of my own photograph of the spoonbill using basic shapes along the way. This was made with simple watercolor paint supplied at the school. I have my heart out to animals, and really took my time with this piece. I prefer doing furry wildlife creatures including wolfs, foxes, wild cats and dogs, and sometimes bears. I dislike using paint and I think that watercolor pencils work best for me. I hope you enjoy the piece of art that took over 3 days to complete.

SUBMISSION: Conserve by Wesley Kotas
Conserve by Wesley Kotas. Pencil, crayon, and marker on paper. Wesley is 10 years old and in 5th grade at Spruce Street School in Seattle. "Seven of my primate characters and Abe, their adopted cobra brother, hold up signs asking humans to "CONSERVE" their natural habitats.
I have always loved drawing, and I have a special affection for primates. Thus, I combined the two and decided to create cartoons with primates as the main characters. My stuffed primate collection serves as the inspiration for an in-home drawing shop and a website. See my stuffed animals come to life through my artwork!
Primates should be protected and allowed to live freely in their natural habitats. They are our closest relatives in the Animal Kingdom. Protect and save the primates!"
Well done, Wesley, this is a great piece of work with a very clear message!
SUBMISSION: Save them by Wesley Kotas
"I am 10 years old and in 5th grade at Spruce Street School in Seattle. I love both primates and drawing, so my favorite activity is to combine the two! Baby orangutans are often captured and kept as pets by humans, who don't know how to care for them and who often treat the orangutans poorly as they get older and less cute. Protect these wonderful primates and their habitats, so they don't become extinct. SAVE THEM." Well said, Wesley! We should all take note of your message which you have highlighted so beautifully in your drawing. Congratulations on a great piece of art!
