Engaging in rough play, a young male (Eastern Lowland) gorilla jumps on his father's back; grabbing handfuls of hair in the process. The inspiration for this sculpture comes from the years of childhood roughhousing with my own father who died in 2014. The title "HORSEPLAY HURTS!" was his way of telling me to knock it off. This allegory represents father and son bonding at its very best.

I admire the uniqueness of all animals, but there is a very majestic quality about male lions. I have featured my lion as pensive and alert, but not aggressive. Painting the fine fur details is enjoyable for me, creating light and shadow, as the lion's profile is highlighted.

This is an adult male orangutan residing in a zoo. He has such a mischievous grin that I wanted to capture. Orangutans are classified as critically endangered so this contest is a great way to make a small contribution to help them.

The mountain lion looks on as the fires rage all around her. Smoke fills the air and chokes her lungs. She surveys the landscape wondering where she will take her cubs to keep them safe from the dangers that consistently threaten her habitat.

They are a couple. With such human characteristics, we can’t help but love and protect them. I studied orangutans, photographed and sketch them at the San Diego zoo. The composition was of my own design as I wanted to tell a story. I have also been on safari in Africa experiencing the natural habit.
