ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2019 Submission
Metal chicken wire creates the amazing skin texture of the elephant known for its toughness. Intricate layered chicken wire also conveys the peaceful and powerful nature of the species with its impenetrable surface.
My sculptures are inspired by the inherent beauty, physical complexity and natural power of the Great Apes and other critically endangered animals. These metal works are made of aluminum and copper wire, assorted hardware and scrap metal. They are intended to heighten awareness and appreciation for all endangered species that urgently require our attention and active protection. I choose my artistic media for the flexible, tangibly direct and expressive linear qualities that I also love in painting and drawing. It is important to me that all sculpture materials I select are upcyled into art as a visible metaphor of environmental conservation. Inspired by Alexander Calder's magical wire Circus animals and entire Circus, I combine physically accurate attributes of the Great Apes and more with pure fun and playful spirit.
