Holy Mackerel! I thought fish was the healthy menu choice! But the big fish eat the little fish and those little guys have been feasting on the plastic debris from the netting that holds our organic limes and the rings that we snap off of the bottles of locally-sourced milk. Many plastics are too small to be filtered out of our waste water systems and they end up in our seas. Under U-V exposure, they photodegrade into microbeads and fibers that leach toxins called PCBs, pesticides, and flame retardants into the water.
These micro particles make their way into our food chain, endangering fish, turtles, seabirds, marine mammals, and humans. They expose us to chemicals that cause cancers, reproductive disorders and neurological deficits.
So what’s a socially conscious pescatarian to do? Sadly, it is now recommended that we limit our fish consumption to twice per week, switch from plastic to reusable containers and utensils, recycle responsibly, and SPREAD THE WORD!
