The Habitat, August 19, 2012. Oil paint on primed canvas by John Rachell. All Rights Reserved. The tropical habitat. Gardens have long represented havens for human beings. They offer to become a place like no other, a place of solitude and company, a place that ceaselessly changes but continues to remain itself. It is a magical place. I explain magic as what happens when "what I think I know" and "what I imagine" complement one another. Painting allows me to express what I see and feel in a magical way. The paintings are composed of complex forms almost chaotic. Out of this complexity an order seems to emerge that is both exciting and beautiful. This brings me joy. I am hopeful to share this joy with the viewer.
