Geri, the Orangutan from the Entertainment Industry. By Agata Ren. Mixed media: painted VHS tape, VHS cassette framed. "This is a re-creation of Geri, who resides at the Center for Great Apes. The VHS is reclaimed from "the Resource Depot". It is out-dated, out-used by our society and so is Geri, the orangutan from the entertainment industry.
I'm looking at our planet and it seems to be getting smaller and everything seems to be connected to the whole. I'm interested in the consequences of human behavior. How much responsibility do we have and what do we owe to the planet if we are to be the most intelligent species? My artwork consists of and features endangered and recently extinct species while using old social publications documenting peoples interests and having those temptations fade into the background! It aims to bring lost creatures back to life, bring attention and admiration by putting those extinct animals up on a pedestal and create a monument. My endangered animals however have a potential to draw human attention to existing species that we share our planet with and which are of course endangered due to modern encroachment. My artwork reflects our society. My mission is to bring about awareness through my artwork."
