"As inspiration, I used a small plastic toy of a gorilla standing regularly on all fours and its front knuckles. I decided that I wanted to make a larger version with materials that have texture and feel almost like a real gorilla. My name is Alec Piedra. I am a 20 year old student at FIU and I have a real interest in both art and animals. I decided to put these two interests to good use when my dad told me that there is an art contest involving animals that I would like to join. I became really excited when I started to get to work on my art project after I agreed with my dad's offer. When he told me that the art project involved endangered animals and is part of a program of great apes, I thought of working on an animal that had both of these descriptions, a gorilla. I wanted to make something that no other person has probably made before that involves using random art supplies that might not have been used together. I have used molding clay, yarn, pipe cleaners, fabric sheets, and a paper cup. It has taken me two months, from the beginning of August to the end of September, to complete my creation. My friends and family really love my finished gorilla and I hope others from the contest would think the same"
