Chelonia Mydas is a watercolor painting of a sea turtle swimming over a coral reef. While spending a day in Cape Hatteras National Seashore in North Carolina, I observed a couple of juvenile green sea turtles feeding near shore. I spent much of the day watching them, along with sting rays, and various shorebirds, all drawn to the area by schools of fish. While I was standing in the surf at high tide, one of the turtles briefly swam right up to my feet, and I was able to capture a photo. I loved the beautiful patterns on the turtle's shell so much, that I was inspired to make a painting of it. This painting is meant to celebrate the beauty of our oceans, and for me, that celebration cannot be decoupled from the knowledge that the oceans are facing countless threats. My hope is that my work will inspire others to appreciate our oceans, and care enough to do whatever they can to help.
