ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2019 Submission
Red Wolf in the style of William Bouguereau's The Shepherdess. The Endangerment Series juxtaposes an endangered species into a historical masterwork, where I comment on the original artist's intentions or complement the composition. Both pay homage and present the significance of both the animal and the art. Each work stands alone as an anecdote of the original and relates to the series as a whole.
All animals represented in the series are listed as endangered species, and without our action soon we will only appreciate these animals as we appreciate the works of the old masters, hanging in images on the walls of museums. The series is unified through the medium of colored pencil.
The Pretend Shepherdess stars the Red Wolf, and it is a play on the guise of wolf in sheep's clothing, but in this case wolf in shepherdess' clothing from the reference to Bouguereau. However with the critically endangered status of the red wolf - who is in more danger, the sheep or the shepherdess?
