ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2019 Submission
I use a combination of lampworking, vacuum encasing, cutting, polishing and intaglio engraving to create images that celebrate the beauty and mystery of nature. Much of my current work contains images of flora or sometimes fauna that are endangered or threatened. I am particularly concerned with the loss of prairie that has occurred in the midwestern part of the US.
"Ghost Flowers" is one of these pieces and speaks about what has happened in Minnesota which used to be covered with tall grass prairies and had a lot more wetlands. The lampworked plants are invasive species such as bull thistles, tansy and corn. The engraved images represent the species that are disappearing such as ram's head orchids, western fringed orchids, dwarf trout lilies, and 4 other plants.
