Coelacanth by Celeste Pe. All Rights Reserved.

I chose a coelacanth because when I was younger I was obsessed with them. My mother would print out articles about them for me to read which is what first taught me about what being endangered meant and how pollution is killing sea life. Although the coelacanth was thought to have gone extinct 65 million years ago, and wasn't rediscovered until recent years, it is still at risk from pollution in its waters.

Elephants are outstanding animals. Asian elephants are smaller than African Elephants. Ever since I saw my first elephant. Asian Elephants are becoming extinct because humans are creating new buildings and dams and taking over the land. I chose to do a DNA like strand around the elephants to show that humans are slowly surrounding elephants and killing them. Most of the time when people think of DNA, they think about human DNA, which is why I chose to do a DNA ring around the elephant.

SUBMISSION: Silent Devotion by Jacqueline Hou

Silent Devotion by Jacqueline Hou. All Rights Reserved.

The painting "Silent Devotion" depicts a scene of two cranes dancing before dawns’ first ray of light. Snowflakes waltz around the duo in a frosty landscape. The cranes nuzzle and embrace each other, displaying their affection to create a heartwarming atmosphere. The red-crowned crane is an endangered species, found in parts of Japan, China, Russia and Korea. They are the second rarest crane species, due to habitat loss (marshes) in urban development. Known for their unison dances during mating season, the birds create a black and white aurora above ground. Also known as the Japanese crane, the cranes symbolize good luck, love and longevity.

I combined my pride of my cultural background with my love for animals to create the pieces of this concentration. My artwork utilizes oil on canvas. Through observation of thoughtfully taken poses, my work revolves around careful rendering of skin tone and fabric and free-flowing, Chinese zodiac inspired designs that reveal both a literal and figurative connection with my cultural background. I juxtaposed the more stiff and geometric figure of my body to the flowing lines and organic shapes of the zodiac design to showcase the beauty of the animals. Both pieces follow the aforementioned plan, differing in pose and design that best showcases the animals.

I have always had a love for animals, especially those that are endangered. Over the last couple of years, I've researched and learned of the threats that are leading these animals to extinction, and now it isn't just a "love" for animals, it's a passion. I want to help them in every way I can, because I truly believe that a world without animals isn't a world at all. Hopefully through my art I can spread that message of hope.

SUBMISSION: Philippine Eagle by Kaia Goodrich

Entry to the ENDANGERED Art & Photography Contest 2017

Philippine Eagle by Kaia Goodrich. All Rights Reserved.

I am a 7th grader at Lavilla School of the Arts and this piece was my first watercolor assignment. I love birds and want to study ornithology in college. Painting birds helps me to understand their anatomy. I chose to feature the Philippine Eagle because I think it is one of the most beautiful and powerful predators and I admire it. Philippine Eagles are currently classified as critically endangered, with an estimated 600 birds left in the wild. They are losing their habitat largely to deforestation. They are an important apex predator, with a diet of mostly flying lemurs. Much like the Bald Eagle in the United States, these majestic birds are a protected national emblem in the Philippines and killing one is punishable by 12 years in prison and a huge fine. In my piece, I wanted to capture the beauty and grace of this powerful yet fragile creature as he soars through the sky in search of a place to roost in a deforested homeland.
