The primates inspired my path. Now a primate advocate and portrait artist, I left a 30-year corporate design career following a volunteer trip to Ape Action Africa. The sanctuary harbors gorilla, chimpanzee and monkey orphans who are victims of bushmeat and wildlife trafficking. I’ve spent almost five years living and volunteering at primate sanctuaries, caring for these remarkable sentient beings, chronicling their faces, actions, voices and stories. I want people to see them as individuals through my work, and appreciate their beauty and the right to live free with their own kind.

The elements in the environment—every leaf, animal, cloud—they, without question bend gently toward the light. So do I. It’s with this notion that I collaborate with my environment to bring these spectacular scenes in nature to canvas. And this collaboration of the elements, me included, combines to transform a simple piece of canvas into an experience to share. This is my intention; to take in these scenes and express my gratitude for being part of it by painting landscapes and wildlife from around the world.
Recently, I ventured through Kenya and Tanzania on safari, visiting five breathtaking preserves. Returning from the wilderness, I created a special series capturing the adventure and story of these incredible, and often threatened, animals and birds. They say ‘every picture tells a story,’ I hope to evoke feelings of serenity and grace,to create awareness about their vulnerability and need to protect them.

Over the last few years my passion for wildlife has surpassed any other love or interest. The rate that we are losing animals due to human greed and climate change is extremely alarming, and action must be taken in every single part of the world to protect species at risk. Having been lucky enough to attend last year's exhibition, I met extraordinary artists who share the same love as I do, all of whom have inspired me to continue fighting for endangered species' protection. Organizations such as the Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, Jane Goodall Institute, and Orangutan Foundation International are doing incredible work to help save our closest living relatives from extinction, and I applaud their dedication and life's work. As human beings it is our duty to stand up for those who don't have a voice -- the fate of all animals on planet Earth depend on it.

The endangered species I picked for the Endangered Apes competition is called the Amur Leopard. Amur Leopards are a subspecies of leopard except they live in colder climates and have thicker coats than normal leopards. Their coats are colored in creamy yellow to rusty orange depending on what their climate is usually like and live in northeast Russia and China. The gaze poise and presence in the picture that the leopard expressed was fascinating and interesting to me. I discovered how to create an impression for the fur and depth in the painting as well as how to create a different sense of focus to accentuate the gaze and expression in the leopard's face. This was also one of my first completed oil paintings in this size (16 x 20). Today only about 84 are recorded living in the wild now we are gradually helping raise the numbers and becoming more aware of them.
I am a 13-year-old young artist living in Miami, FL. The subjects I'm most interested in are portraits of animals and humans; capturing the fur textures, skin tones, and expressions. I also look at different compositions, perspectives, and poses. I am most interested in oil paints as a medium, but I also find pastel, pencil, and watercolors exciting as well. I'm also interested in exploring still-life as a subject and building techniques in shading and value to add to my overall skill set. I aim to continue building my skills to be able to capture expressive emotions and movement.

I have worked for the protection of wildlife and the preservation of natural environments during my life. As an artist, I feel strongly about my choices for subjects. The difficulty is often just narrowing my infinite list. I find something of interest, beauty, achievement, creation, and inspiration in painting animals. Painting with fine acrylics on canvas, I use color as my lead, to contrast, blend, isolate, feature, magnify, or simplify. My art is my way of recreating what I love, which is the wonder of nature.

My work is focused on themes that discuss the balance of nature and how nature touches our souls. I cut paper with scissors because to me the material and the production process reflect the delicacy and also the fragility of nature. The process of scissors cutting (Scherenschnitt) is like woodcutting or sculpting, in that you start with a blank resource and create the art by cutting parts of it away. All of my cuttings are cut out of a single sheet of paper; that means that the remaining design is still one piece of paper.
I am able to cut lines that are no thicker than a thread. This allows the smallest details that help to construct pictures within pictures. The final art piece is glued onto white paper. I glue the paper only at selected places. This adds depth because the unglued parts are not flush with the matting board. I use these subtle depths differences also to guide the eye of the viewer over the artwork and have the image cast shadows.

My work originates from the idea of pointillism, but has developed in a style, slightly, different than the traditional form. Though I often create works in the style of realism, the dot technique evolved from dire circumstances, in which I was left with little use of my hands, after a severe accident. Unable to grasp a brush or pencil, I began experimenting by dripping dots with the tip of a brush on canvas. After much trial and error, I discovered a method that accommodated my need for painting and allowed recovery time for my hands. This style has been a signature of my art for a few years now. Though I am now recovered, I have continued to use this form of pointillism as one of my preferred artistic methods.
For this particular piece, "Armored," I chose the pointillism style to show vibrancy in a mandala style pattern. I also wanted to portray the beauty of the Pangolin's incredible scale armor with metallic reflection.

Helen Crispino has spent the last several years establishing her reputation as a truly gifted contemporary fine artist. Hailing from Dalton, Helen received her primary education in the arts within Northeastern Pennsylvania including a Liberal Arts degree from Keystone College in Laplume and a degree in Painting and Illustration from Luzerne County Community College. Helen completed her training under the guidance of nationally renowned realist Anthony Waichulis at The Waichulis Studio.
Helen continues to exhibit nationally and her work is sought after by many knowledgeable collectors. Across the country, from the John Pence in San Francisco, to The Meyer Gallery in Santa Fe', to the Salmagundi Club of New York, Helen's work continued to garner attention and accolades. While she continues to appear in most major art publication regularly, Helen's work recently touched upon international publication with her top honors in the U.K. Wildscape's Wildlife Painter of the Year competition.

Through this apprenticeship I am learning the skills necessary to be a jeweler such as soldering, waxing, casting, and stone setting. This piece showcases my exploration of many of these techniques.
