SUBMISSION: Wildebeest by H. Allen Benowitz

ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2017 Submission.

Wildebeest by H. Allen Benowitz. All Rights Reserved.

Attracted to photography as a child, I enjoyed taking candid shots of my friends at the children's home where I was raised.  Receiving honorable mention, early on, in the International Kodak Contest, that Kodak moment reawakened those early desires.

As a former court reporter and videographer, the camera became a natural segue and my eye for detail moved from the courtroom to the world. Featured: numerous publications, including the ARTnews, Art Business News, The Laurel of Asheville, the International Contemporary Art artists book, and the Exposure Award Portraiture. Benowitz has also been chosen as one of Art Business News' Top Emerging Artists for 2014. In an international competition, in July 2015, his work was on display at the Louvre in Paris. In March 2016, he was presented with six Winner and Nominee Medals in the 9th Annual International Color Awards Competition. His photo subjects include Nature, wildlife, people, architecture, and adventure travel.

SUBMISSION: Sunset Heron by Kirsten Hines

ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2017 Submission.

Sunset Heron by Kirsten Hines. All Rights Reserved.

Compelled by a life-long passion for the environment, I photograph wildlife and nature. Traveling around the world to explore both familiar and novel environs, I seek to capture spontaneous wildlife moments and unique perspectives on nature. I aim to lure viewers more deeply into the natural world than they might venture on their own. I strive to evoke the experience of being in nature by photographing un-manipulated scenes and minimally post-processing images, to most accurately convey wilderness in its organic state. My photographic collections include: Nature in Abstract, stylistically revealing art in nature; Nature and Travel, emphasizing portraits of wildlife and habitats around the world; and South Florida Birds and Gardens, inspiring bird-friendly landscaping through an intimate view of birds and plants, featured in my two award-winning books. With all my work, I hope to restore human connections to the planet that have too long been neglected.

SUBMISSION: Monarchs by Paul Dempsey

ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2017 Submission.

Monarchs by Paul Dempsey. All Rights Reserved.

Paul Dempsey, a computer programmer and Webmaster by trade, describes himself as a fine art photographer and a ’digital manipulator.’ His keen vision captures ordinary details from daily life and transforms them into images of beauty and wit, filled with contrasting shapes and effects.

Paul’s current series of abstract work focuses on macro images of nature combined with additional exposures of ice, snow, sand, and sky.  These futuristic scenes, inspired by the writings of Kurt Vonnegut, offer a wry commentary on global warming and climate change. Paul’s work is printed on a variety of substrates including metal, paper, and canvas.  His photography has been displayed in galleries such as Ashawagh Hall, Southampton Cultural Center, George Billis Gallery, Water Mill Museum, East End Arts, Guild Hall and Spectrum @ Art Basel, Miami.

Paul has donated his time and images for fundraising for nature conservancy and animal rescue.

SUBMISSION: Reflections of Power by Paul Murray

ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2017 Submission.

Reflections of Power by Paul Murray. All Rights Reserved.

My approach to photography and life is to remain open, trust my instincts and discard labels that are divisive. My work reflects a blend of my lifelong interests in art, nature, technology and societal change. I am very much a visual traveler who interacts with people, places, objects and ideas on a variety of levels through several planes of vision that intersect with time and space. At those intersections, I may capture a moment and portray it with my implied perspective. The journeys to those intersections afford the opportunity to see, and perhaps become intrigued by what I am experiencing. The uniqueness of each journey allows for new visions to be appreciated in what may seem familiar venues. I see no end point to my evolving vision and shifting perspectives. To the extent that my images enrich the experience and vision of others, I feel that I have achieved a way of communicating that is unique to me as a photographer.

SUBMISSION: Feeling Blue by Lisa Renee Ludlum

Feeling Blue by Lisa Renee Ludlum. All Rights Reserved.

One of my favorite quotes is "it’s not what you look at that matters, it's what you see" by Thoreau.  I find this so true with the art of photography. As a life-long Florida gal, I have truly been blessed to live in this amazing state - a canvas of endless possibilities and diverse opportunities.

My lens is an extension of my eye and my camera is a window my soul. Beauty surrounds us, yet the fine details are often missed in our busy lives. Understanding this concept, I have channeled my expertise as a photographer in conjunction with my passionate artistic style by capturing life's intricate moments.  I get great joy out of sharing my visionary images through the magic of photography.

Great Horned Owlet, Dreaming by Janis Hurley. All Rights Reserved.

My work as a photographer is an intimate expression of man's relationship to nature and wildlife.  Our commonalities and burdens should give us compassion for our environment.  I want the viewer to experience the significance, uniqueness and emotion of each animal and wild place.  The challenges that wildlife, in all forms, face due to habitat loss and man's encroachment call us to be more mindful of our daily practices.

Endangered - African Lion by Zsuzsanna Luciano. All Rights Reserved.

What you create is your artwork - your life, your paintings, your sculptures and your photographs. All of these have an invisible stamp of your core balance, of your inner soul’s vibration and energy which are connected to our Creator.

That's why it's so important that your creation or art has to come from your soul and not from the ego.

I am interested and fascinated with architecture that is created by nature and by man.

Conservation and staying connected to the inner spirit is my main focus.

Inspiring others to discover their hidden treasure of themselves is my lifetime goal.

So come along with me on my journey and lets discover together the true forces and meanings of our surroundings.

SUBMISSION: The essence of a leopard by Joseph Anthony

ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2017 Submission.

The essence of a leopard by Joseph Anthony. All Rights Reserved.

With these leopard images, as you make eye contact with their penetrating gazes, it should beg the question "who is really endangered when it comes to the survival of a species"? 50% of our oxygen comes from forests and 50% from the oceans. Big cats are known as apex predators or umbrella species. This means that if we protect the umbrella species and by default its habitat, we automatically protect the many other species and bio diversity coexisting within the same habitat. Save big cats and we ultimately save ourselves. I hope my work inspires an appreciation for the beauty of our world, to help draw attention to the fragility of our planet and the need to protect all living things.

This topic, 'endangered species', is very dear to my heart, To be able to help awareness of this topic with my photos brightens my day about a very dire subject. If the bee disappears many of our flowers fruits and vegetables will also go extinct. we can't let that happen.

Mother and Child by Carol Leadbetter. All Rights Reserved.

One cannot return from an African safari unaffected. Lions, proud and free, prowl your memory. Great herds of grazing zebra and wildebeest wander across the horizon of your mind’s eye. Parades of elephants leave imprints of awesome power and size while stirring your heart with gentle nurturing behaviors.

Carol Leadbetter’s photographs are a testament to what we may lose. Some images convey a sense of intimacy between the viewer and the subject. In others, a single animal is isolated against the great skies and plains, its weight challenging the grandeur of the land.

Images in this exhibit are printed by the artist employing a variety of surfaces and alternative photographic processes. Handmade papers are used to reflect the divergent textures and colors of the land. In addition, some images are printed on Mapepa elephant dung paper believed to incorporate the spirit of the animal.

Kolyma Burning Bright by David Bartlett. All Rights Reserved.

Seeing Animals.

Animals are so near. We hear their cries. We see their purposeful movement. We compassionately recognize familiar defining behaviors of our own. We are stopped by their gaze and thrill to their response. They touch us and we, it seems, them with an immediacy only rarely encountered with other humans. And yet, without language, they remain so far. Reason's limiting inability to positively represent its own absence, despite voluminous knowledge produced by meticulous inquiry, finds them infinitely remote, incommensurable, other. In no other domain of experience do we feel so keenly the possibility of understanding everything and knowing nothing.

Art spans the gulf at the foot of reason. Insightfully formed representations, still and silent, can register the nature of things animate and sonant. Art can validate and celebrate the unsettling wonder, awe, fear, and love that we feel in the presence of creatures, beings both akin and unlike us.
