Artist Statement

It’s an honor to participate in the Art4Apes initiatives and to be part of this creative community that is so committed to wildlife conservation.  Beautiful images and soulful artwork can convey strong messages without a word, and do so much toward raising awareness.  Through our collective voices, we can educate and inspire others to take action and even become advocates for the wildlife that we love and share through our art.

I have firsthand experience with the power of images through my involvement with wild horse advocacy. I’m a founding member of a large group of photographers who are actively working together to keep them wild and free and raise awareness through our photography. Most people don’t know we have wild horses in the United States, and that they are vanishing. Step one to saving something is to tell their story and there is limited time to deliver that message. By presenting a beautiful or touching image, a connection can be made in just a few seconds. This creates a path to awareness, which can lead to positive change.

My interest in wildlife conservation is a large part of who I am as a person and artist.  I have loved nature since my early childhood years, then my passion for photography began when I received my first SLR when I was 16 years old.  Many years later, I now shoot with a mirrorless camera and long telephoto, allowing me to get close-up shots while being respectful of my subject.  Nature, and in particular wildlife, has always been my first and favorite subject, and most anything from butterflies to horses to mountain lions are on my favorites list.

When I spend time in nature with the wild ones, I feel a connection that is not expressible in words. The pureness, the feeling of freedom, and the essence of belonging to something greater than myself all converge and it is this moment that I am compelled to capture and share with others. Everyone, including the next generation and those who follow deserves an opportunity to connect and resonate with the beauty of the wild. And for that to be possible, we must do better to conserve and protect our wildlife.

Shows, Awards, and Features

My work has been featured in juried gallery exhibits in northern Virginia and also the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo in Denver, CO in February-March 2020. I recently was honored with "Highly Commended" and "Commended" recognition on two of my pieces in the Art4Apes International Competition in Fall 2020.

New Work

I have recently returned from a trip to Utah to visit the wild horses of the Onaqui Mountains.  I am looking forward to editing the many images I shot during my time there.
