ENDANGERED: Art4Apes is delighted to announce that Theodore Heublein is our July 2021 Virtual Artist in Residence

Congratulations to Theodore Heublein for becoming our July 2021 Virtual Artist in Residence. The Virtual Artist in Residence Program is awarded monthly to an artist and a photographer who have submitted 3 or more entries to the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest and have been selected by the Curatorial Committee as best interpreting the aims of the Contest.

Artist Statement

When artists support conservation and awareness of endangered species, they are sharing their voices and talents in producing positive change. The more we share, the more people we touch and help cause that one more person to help make a difference. So share your art! Share your ideas!

I am inspired by what I see in front of me, and strive to share that moment with the viewer. I paint all over the world out 'in the wild' at all times of day or night, and paint underwater with scuba gear, to try and capture these moments in watercolor, acrylic, or oils.

Whenever possible I paint on-site, including sitting on a beach with walrus, climbing an iceberg in a fjord to paint from, and painting underwater with scuba gear. I work using Transparent Watercolors, Acrylics, and Oils, depending on what I feel can best express the scene (as well as what materials I can travel with!).

Capturing these images of where I am as I am in that moment makes the artwork a part of the experience - including the sight, smell, weather, humidity, and emotions experienced. I hope to share these feelings with the viewer as close to the immediacy of this experience as I can. I use a camera as well, for later exploration of the experience in the studio from my reference.

I share a portion of the sale of my pieces with several marine non-profits and National Parks to raise awareness of and care for our resources.

Continuing projects include exploring more ‘sous marine’ techniques, new (for me) paint colors, painting at night, and revisiting older subject matter with my current eyes.

Currently have show in Pacific Grove Arts Center this September and October for ‘Above and Below Point Lobos State Natural Reserve’ showcasing the Reserve environs from a boat both above and below the surface over the last five years.

Why I entered the Endangered Fine Art and Photography Contest?

This is the third year of submitting my artwork to the Endangered Fine Art and Photography Contest. I enter this contest to:

  • share my awareness of and appreciation for the diversity of life on Earth.

  • share with others what I see and hope it creates awareness and appreciation for them.

  • give back to a cause that is making a difference for endangered animals.

  • share in the visions of other artists and photographers to expand my own conservation awareness and ideas.
