SUBMISSION: UNICORN SUMMARY OF ENDANGERMENT BY KIMBERLY HEISE

Unicorn: Summary of Endangerment by Kimberly Heise who says "I’ve always loved elephants, and after learning about how endangered they are I decided to make this piece about that problem. Elephants are killed for their ivory, and are also threatened by deforestation, which in turn threatens other species of animals. The plight of elephants is also linked to human violence, as the ivory black market funds terrorist groups and other violent groups. All of these things are connected, and so I wanted to do a piece that visually linked them together. I juxtaposed endangered animal reports, Ivory trade reports, human trafficking statistics, deforestation facts and the numeral values of the casualties in several of current wars. I used the imagery of the unicorn to symbolize all animals, endangered or otherwise, as well as humanity. We are all connected, and so if something happens to one species it affects another, and so regardless of where or what the violence is, it is important to acknowledge and change."
