SUBMISSION: Sulky Gorilla by Capucine Safir
My work is all about rounded shapes. It is smooth and sensual. I think it makes me feel more comfortable and secure. During all the process of creation, I keep caressing my sculptures. My hands are my eyes. It is by touching that I know where and how to carve into the stone or plaster block. Life put me through rough time when my son was born disabled but there is always something good you can take out even from the worst situation and my son brought me to sculpture in 2011.
Though my inspiration is drawn from my instinct, the worlds of sculpture, design as well as painting or Nature itself also make up my varied artistic influences.
I enjoy every aspect of this art: the physical implication, the sound of the tools, the dust.. But, most of all, it is the appearance of the form emerging fthe block which makes direct carving so special. I carve with hand tools only.
In 2013, I moved to Miami, where I am pursuing my work on mixed media.
