Rhinos on the savannah by Pat Joseph. All Rights Reserved.
I am a self-taught artist and have been painting since the late 1970's, although there are gaps over the years while I worked and raised my children. When I started painting I chose more dark and dramatic subjects, as it was a darker period in my life. People in crisis or drama drew me to try to capture their emotions, strengths and weaknesses. I became interested in other subjects as I've continued learning.
Picking up the brush was something that seemed natural. I had drawn pictures for as long as I can remember. I began with trial and error, and somehow my paintings gained a life of their own and lead me in the right direction. I continue learning and pushing myself. It is a joy that has stayed with me throughout my life.
When I think about a new painting I get an overall idea of what I want the finished piece to look like. As I paint the picture may change as I finish the background and start moving forward in my mind's eye.
