These beautiful falcons have declined due to fire suppression, overgrazing and agriculture that altered the native desert prairies and poisoning from pesticides like DDT. By 1952 they were almost completely wiped out where only one wild breeding pair was found in New Mexico. In 1986 they were placed on the Endangered Species list. With the partnership between the environmentalist, ranchers and the U S Military 1000 captive-bred Northern Aplomado Falcons were released. Because of these efforts they are starting to come back.
