SUBMISSION: Indah, Sumatran Orangutan by Dawn Siebel
I began painting endangered species in 2013. The animals in my paintings are distinct individuals, not generic representatives of their species. They are equal beings that meet the viewer eye-to-eye and claim their right to be.
In early 2015, I started meeting the animals I paint. Seeking them out in zoos nationwide, I watch them for hours, absorbing impressions and taking reference pictures to guide me back in the studio. As I work later, I retain a sense of the presence that I met. I work in oil on wood panels and canvas.
