SUBMISSION: The Dodo Bird Turban by Milda Bublys
"The Dodo bird is the most well-known animal icon of extinction. From reality to fable, the Dodo bird was a character in Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", and came to define the very term of being extinct or obsolete. To me, this magical creature represents the need to call to attention the plight of many of our endangered species, that they might not "go to the way of the dodo". The Turban is constructed entirely by hand. Each feather is made of unbleached muslin and vintage silk gazaar, sewn and cut by hand, and attached to a cotton and tulle base. The face is embroidered, with a relief effect at the beak, and beading at the nostrils and eyes.
The Milda Bublys collection is comprised of clothing, turbans, and accessories made from vintage and repurposed materials. The workmanship employs ages-old sewing and craft techniques, and strives to reuse materials that would have been otherwise laid to waste. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, and a work of wearable art."
