SUBMISSION: The Deconstruction of Marious by Deana Cizek

This piece was a tribute to Marious the Giraffe who was killed by the Copenhagen Zoo due to over crowding. The 2 year old Giraffe was given his favorite treat, rye bread and shot in the head. This piece is a silent reminder of his life cut short due to the cruelty in zoos. I have been an observer of nature all my life. I am continually awestruck at the beauty of the natural world and the magic and mystery in every living thing. My work is a study of living forms, celebrating the structure of how something is made along with the transcendental presence of the subject.

I tell a story in each of my pieces using symbolism in found materials incorporated in my work whether it is the subject’s natural surroundings, life or journey. I also use symbols from myths and religions of other cultures to tell a story or acknowledge the beauty of nature that those cultures revered and celebrated.

I have a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the Art Institute of Chicago, with a strong focus in anatomy and scientific illustration. Recently, I plunged in head first back into the creative world, finding my passion once again. I have found sculpture to be a new vehicle for me and my expression.
