Pretty Plastics by Jane Dell

A baby albatross is washed up dead on a shore along with branches and debris. The open gut, filled with colorful, broken down bits of plastics that were ingested , are found by the tons in our oceans, is the cause of death. Throughout human history, animals have lived alongside us as our source of food, comfort, and inspiration for folklore, art and religion. Humans and animals are integrally connected, but contemporary life has profoundly disconnected us. I want to portray in my oil painting titled, “Pretty Plastics”, how astounding and shocking our life style of throw- away plastics dumped in our oceans are directly affecting wildlife, and particularly seabirds and baby albatrosses that are digesting broken down plastics and dying.
