The Amur tiger, also known as the Siberian tiger, was once hunted to near extinction. When their numbers fell to 40, the Russian government gave them full protection. That was 80 years ago. Their numbers today sit around 450 in the wild, but they remain threatened by illegal poaching and habitat loss caused by illegal logging and forest fires. Though they once ranged throughout the Russian Far East and northern China and Korea, their range is limited now to the forested areas of the Russian Far East.
