Red wolves are only found in the northeastern Carolinas of the United States. Due to habitat loss, large-scale hunting by humans, and hybridization with coyotes, their population has continued to decline, and they became extinct in the wild in 1980. In 1987, a reintroduction project was implemented using artificially bred individuals, and now the number of wild species (including cubs) has recovered to 100-130.
