This oil painting depicts a Malayan tiger (also known as Panthera tigris jacksoni) in its tropical forest habitat. Malayan tigers have been classified as critically endangered animals by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and their rapid population decline is caused by logging operations and road development, and deforestation has made much of their land and habitat unsuitable. Additionally, they are threatened by hunting. Many experts contend that if no drastic action is taken to address their population decline, they will likely go extinct in a few years. It is critical that of the nine tiger subspecies (including three are already extinct), efforts are made so that the six subspecies that are left stay protected, and action needs to be taken to prevent the risk of this group of tiger’s from having the same fate as previous tiger species that became extinct.
