ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2021 Submission

Lauraette Kirkland is a native-born South Carolinian who has always loved art and being creative. My love of art began when I was very young, says Kirkland. My mother would recall that from an early age I would paint or draw on any scrap paper or board I could find and ask people to pose for me. The more she learned about art, she became in awe of old masters like Michelangelo and wanted to do realistic art.

Although she was a business major, she has kept art up front in her education by taking many classes on at local schools and universities on art education, art history, drawing and painting while working many years as an accountant.

In 2003, Ms. Kirkland decided to branch out her medium by learning to sculpt, she began working with clay by using hand building techniques with no prior experience or instruction. I fell in love with the fun and relaxation of working with mud. At first I was my typical impatient self because of my desire to see how a piece would turn out.
