ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2020 Submission
My piece is based on Orangutan Sandra from the Center for Great Apes in Florida. Sandra who is 34 years old is a hybrid orangutan of the two separate species of Borneo and Sumatra orangutans. Known for their distinctive red fur orangutans are the largest arboreal mammal (living in the trees) spending most of their time in trees. These great apes share 96.4% of our genes and are highly intelligent creatures. The name orangutan means "man of the forest" in the Malay language. 'Looking from Within' was inspired by the interesting gaze and pose from Sandra the Orangutan. It was created on a 9x9 in. Bristol paper with layered Ohuhu markers and Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils. Bornean orangutan is now estimated at about 104 700 left based on geographic ranges. (Endangered) and the Sumatran about 7 500 (Critically Endangered).
