SUBMISSION: Are You Listening? by Mirena Suarez
ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2019 Submission
This series of works was created in response to an Art Residency that I completed at the Hermitage Artist Retreat, in Manasota Key, Florida. I approached the residency with a pre-conceived idea to work on a specific body of work, but during the residency, I changed plans and decided to start working on this works based on my experience at the place in relationship with the environment. Spending time at the Hermitage and experiencing the natural environment became my second nature, as I decided to explore themes such as the relationship of man with its environment, its fragility and impermanence. I incorporated a variety of non-traditional art materials, organic materials from the site, such as seaweed, algae, shells, sand, cava grape (seagrape) leaves, seaoats, etc.
