ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2019 Submission

This Bornean, as well as the Sumatran orangutan are both critically endangered. The conversion of their rainforest habitat to palm oil plantations has been a major contributing factor in their decline. In 2016 it was estimated that only 100,000 orangutans survived in the wild, with that number cut by more than half by 2025.

This photo was taken in the Tabin Wildlife Reserve, on July 31, 2018 while staying at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge. He had just finished his breakfast in a fig tree and climbed down and passed by me as he made his way to cross the river to look for brunch.
