SUBMISSION: Everglades Prayer Wheel by Eileen Powell
ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2019 Submission
This Everglades Prayer Wheel is textured with the flora and fauna of the national park and displays the interconnection and fragility of this ecosystem. This prayer wheel is inspired by Buddhist practices and traditions and focuses on compassion for all life. By spinning the wheel in a steady and rhythmic pace one focuses on the interconnectedness of the natural world and the beauty it brings to our daily lives.
My work both celebrates the natural world and seeks to draw attention to the challenges. The influence of human activities on the natural world has escalated and is causing grave problems, such as extinction and global warming. These changes prompt me to express my fear and concern through my art. Realizing humanity is a part of nature, we need to be aware of not only the impacts of our activities but the control we have over our choices. As more and more land is converted for human use, increasing numbers of animals are going extinct and our seas are becoming over polluted. But what is important to realize is that we, humans, are the ones that lose. Humans lose not only the health of our planet but also the wonder of its diversity and the beauty of experiencing nature.
