SUBMISSION: Endangered B by Irit Rosenberg
ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2019 Submission
High fired clay wood knobs found material. Wooden peg puzzles were a staple of my childhood. They taught me to recognize the names, shapes, and markings of different species: giraffes, lions, tigers and elephants became as familiar to me as cats and dogs. I took for granted that I could lift these glorious creatures up by their pegs and return them to their place whenever I wanted.
Today, these animal friends are endangered, on the cusp of extinction. So it is with Gone. The pegs are a metaphor. Oversized, colorful, even garish, they represent our greedy disregard for nature. As we pull on the pegs, and discard the puzzle pieces, we leave behind only negative spaces that we will soon be forced to fill with our memories of the glorious animals that are no more.
Once a centerpiece in our ecosystem, these animals will become relics, known and characterized through a simplistic and unassuming childhood puzzle.
