Artist Statement
Animals and wildlife have always found a place in Jody's life. She can't begin to calculate how many injured or orphaned animals came to live with her as a child. Her mom never knew what she would find in Jody's pocket. Baby bird? Mouse? Fallen squirrel? Bat? It was this love for animals she passed on to her son. While he was growing up, he shared his home with dogs, rabbits, finches, turtles, hedgehogs, and many dogs boarded for friends and family.
It should then come as no surprise that animals would be her subjects for artwork.
Although Jody is a self-directed artist, she has taken advantage of learning opportunities from several instructors that fulfill her objectives in style and approach and broadened her technique. She paints what makes her happy, which shows in the final results. Jody thinks this is an important message: Paint what makes you happy!
Her works are enjoyed in many private shops and personal collections in the U.S. and Europe. Her recognition as an award-winning artist in this global competition Art4Apes, produced a sense of pride in being able to contribute to the Center for Great Apes and an opportunity to stand alongside other artists she has long admired.
Wildlife paintings can help educate people about the importance of protecting endangered species. Viewers better understand the animals' needs and how human activity can impact their well-being. In addition to raising awareness and inspiring action, wildlife paintings can help generate funds for conservation efforts. Viewers can help ensure future generations enjoy and appreciate our natural world's beauty.
Why Animals and Conservation are Important
Because of a 43-year career with the airlines, Jody was fortunate to have had many chances to travel around the world and enjoy new cultures and diverse environments. Highlights include five African countries, Costa Rican jungles, forests of the Carpathian Mountains, the Outback of Australia, and even the Fijian Reefs. Each area has concerns about conservation, the environment, and wildlife therein. Jody could see first-hand the importance of being a responsible caretaker and understanding that everything on Earth is connected. We are the caretakers! If we destroy one, we will clear the path for our destruction.
Why I Entered Endangered?
Before entering this contest, Jody always focused her art on painting animals, endangered or otherwise. People seem naturally drawn to images of animals even if they are not interested in purchasing them. So, when she encountered this competition, it offered an opportunity to bring even more attention to animal art but also a focus on species that might be endangered. Art focusing on animals can give them a voice and bring awareness to their plight that might not otherwise have been seen or heard.
Jody shares her talent and ideas to give animals a place where their voices can be heard and a place to be seen.
